There’s a new collaboration in town — following the disbanding of Mercury Girls earlier this year, the band’s vocalist Sarah Schimeneck teamed up with local experimental musician and well-known producer Jeff Ziegler for the kind of thing only two artists of incredible talent and creativity can do. The result is Inlets, a hauntingly ambient, delightfully synth-filled project that so far is three tracks strong, and whether it turns out to be a one-off collab or an ongoing project, it’s a fantastic addition to our fall listening.

Inlets quietly released its first recordings on Bandcamp earlier this week, and you can stream them below. Clocking in at six minutes, the dark and brooding “The Last Dog” features Schimeneck on vocals and piano and Ziegler on synth. It’s followed by the louder, shimmering “Drone in the Dark” and the heavy, rhythm-driven “Winnowing,” which throw some bass and drums into the mix.

For Schimeneck, Inlets is a change from the driving indie pop energy of her old bands (she also played in Pet Milk), giving a chance to see her artistry in a new light. Ziegler’s name has been floating around the Philly scene for awhile, both as a solo musician, leader of Arc in Round and a producer for everyone from experimental harpist Mary Lattimore to indie rocker Allison Crutchfield. Any collab that packs this kind of combination of star power is certainly welcome here.
