“Imagine Kamasi Washington met Snarky Puppy at a party, got drunk and recorded some funky jams. Then I came along and chopped it all up.” Saxophonist Steve Davit emailed us this description of his debut single as a solo artist, released today, and it holds up. “Forward” is a guaranteed mood-boosting and body-warming sonic gift wrapped up and delivered in three minutes of groovy beats and smooth sax.

Although this is his solo debut, you may know the Philly-based musician from his featured spots with the alt-electronic duo Marian Hill, Havertown natives who have enjoyed widespread success and growth over the past few years. Davit tours with the duo and thrives when he’s set loose to riff and improvise on the stage, but this solo effort showcases what he and his saxophone can do in the studio when building a world of funk and jazz informed by hip hop beats and buttery vibes.
