1958 – Elvis Presley gets his orders to report to duty from the US Army. He is allowed a 60-day deferment so he could finish the film King Creole.

1964 – The Beatles’ first American album is released: Meet the Beatles!

1982 – During an Ozzy Osbourne concert in Des Moines, Iowa, someone in the audience throws a live bat onto the stage. Stunned by the light, the bat lay motionless, and thinking it was a rubber fake, the singer picks it up and attempts to bite off its head as part of his regular act. After the show, Ozzy is immediately rushed to the nearest hospital for rabies shots.

1988 – The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Drifters, Bob Dylan, and The Supremes are the third class inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

1997 – Ben and Jerry’s introduces Phish Food, a new flavor of ice cream named after the rock band. The ingredients are chocolate ice cream, marshmallows, caramel, and fish-shaped pieces of fudge.

2009 – Bon Iver releases the follow-up to his hugely-successful album For Emma, Forever Ago. Blood Bank, a four-track EP, includes the song “Woods,” which goes on to be sampled by Kanye West on his track “Lost in the World.”
