This musical tour of Philadelphia takes you from Harold Melvin to Hop Along.

Rather than celebrating the country, we celebrated our community. Heading into the 4th of July on the XPN Local Show last night, we presented two hours of Philly music from over the past five decades — roughly 1972 to present.

We started and ended the program on two Gamble & Huff classics, one by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes and one by The O’Jays. In between we heard hip-hop from Schoolly D to Freeway to Eve and The Roots; we heard punk by Scram and Dead Milkmen all the way to The Menzingers; we heard singer-songwriters like Amos LeeBirdie Busch and Jill Scott; we heard contemporary rock by The War on Drugs and Hop Along; and so much more.

Listen to the full two-hour #CelebratePhilly special and check out the playlist below.
