Philadelphia-born but Brooklyn-based musician Mirah will return to her first hometown this fall for a show at Johnny Brenda’s on October 13, touring behind the release of her forthcoming sixth LP Understanding. She’s been writing, recording and touring for over 20 years now, and various iterations of her music have seen her span personas from acoustic singer/songwriter to experimental pop artist and everything in between.

Known for her insightful and astute lyricism and eagerness to experiment with sound and theme, Mirah wrote the new album during a time of personal strife, and with the greater political atmosphere in mind. The songwriter explained in a press release:

“We all have needs and we all have dreams. We want so much to feel love and to give to each other, to ourselves, to the world. But how does this fit in with the constant barrage of information and distraction, of truths and lies? How do we move through this rapidly fluctuating reality with a sense of resilience and empowerment?”
Understanding is out September 7; listen to a few tracks from the forthcoming album below. Opening the Philly show is local rapper Sammus; find tickets and more information on the XPN Concert Calendar.
