Year-End Mania is the Key’s annual survey of the things below the surface that made 2018 incredible. Today, Key contributor Maureen Walsh recaps the year’s best Instagram follows.

Tired of the arguments and pettiness of Facebook and Twitter, this year I (and many others) began focusing more of my time on Instagram. Seeing pictures of cats, sunny vacations, concerts, and fun hangouts beats witnessing one awkward argument after another between strangers.

There are five people that I have been following on Instagram that are funny, talented, and Gritty.

1. Michael Che (@chethinks) — The most clever Instagram account is SNL head writer and Weekend Update co-host Michael Che’s. He doesn’t post pictures, only Stories. His Stories can be about anything from his ginormous sneaker collection to explaining white privilege to “Megan” to discussing his views on comedy with other people probably named “Megan.”

2. Busy Philipps (@busyphilipps) — If actress/talk show host/author Busy Philipps lived in Philly, she would most likely be an XPN member. Seeing what is playing in her car or on her phone is a joy. Today, for example she listened to Beck, Fugazi, and Jay Som. Sometimes she even lip syncs to Hop Along or sings Tori Amos karaoke with her friends. And she posts it all for our enjoyment. A true treasure.

3. Ernest Stuart (@onlyernest) — Trombone player and Center City Jazz Fest director Ernest Stuart loves to jam. He will play along with a video of his favorite singers, or a popular meme. He will accompany an a cappella Jenifer Lewis, he will jam along with a marching band kid who is REALLY into the song he’s playing. Once he jammed along with an Erykah Badu video and she shared his creative take on her song. Seriously, Ernest’s #TrombonesNobodyAskedFor videos are amazing and funny.

4. Laiya St. Clair (@laiyasworld) — Warning: if seeing people living their best life is in any way upsetting to you, you might get very mad at Questlove Supreme producer and co-host Laiya St. Clair. Her Instagram videos of QLS tapings and hanging out with the likes of Lenny Kravitz, Tessa Thompson, and David Alan Grier are adorable and will bring a smile to your face.
