Long running Philly folk singer Rev. T.J. McGlinchey releases his latest full length album, Still in Love, this Friday with a headlining concert at World Cafe Live upstairs. To warm up for the gig, he appeared on the XPN Folk Show with Ian Zolitor on Sunday, March 24th for an acoustic performance and chat.

After opening with “It Ain’t Easy,” McGlinchy talked with host Ian Zolitor about the personal growth that went into writing these new songs, lots of ups and downs since debuting in 2012 with Tell Me To Stay. That record was recorded right after he dropped out of West Chester University and moved to South Philly.

“The first album is mostly the love and heartbreak songs of a late 20s guy,” says McGlinchey. “This one has a little more experience to it.”

Two of the songs he performed showcase that: “Pennsylvania Bound,” a song about immigration told from the perspective of McGlinchey’s friends who moves to the U.S. from South America in search of a better life, and “Think I’ll Be a Good Dad,” his song about eagerly anticipating parenthood.

You can hear both of those performances in the player below, along with details about Friday night’s show at World Cafe Live, which will also feature Mason Porter, Christopher Davis Shannon’s jazz trio, singer-songwriter Alex Stewart (whose album McGlinchey recently produced), and comedian Soula Davis (McGlinchey’s wife). Tickets and more information on the show can be found at the XPN Concert Calendar.
