This month, funk, soul, and Afrobeat instrumentalists Budos Band return with a new album, Budos Band V, out April 12th on Daptone Records.

V is the band’s followup to their 2014 release, Burnt Offering, a record that found the band injecting rawer, rock elements into their soulful sound. With V, Budos continue to finely distill the various genres they’ve become so adept at mixing together.

“Old Engine Oil” is a burner of a tune that sounds like its title. It’s dirty and propulsive, with tight psychedelic guitar riffs and drum breaks driving the song’s vibe, which is best described as Tower of Power meets the Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage.” Almost 20 years into their career, Budos Band has refined their rhythmic and rock and influences into something greater than the sum of the musical genre parts.

Below, listen to “Old Engine Oil.”
