Things have been extremely quiet in the world of Philadelphia power trio Cayetana since they wrapped a European tour with The Menzingers over a year ago. Singer-guitarist Augusta Koch founded Gladie, bassist Allegra Anka went back to school, drummer Kelly Olsen co-launched Zimmerman’s Deli with Dan Zimmerman of Restorations. And today, the band re-emerged to share with fans that it would be officially closing the book on this part of their lives.

Cayetana’s farewell-for-the-forseeable-future shows are happening August 1 in Boston, at The Sinclair; August 2nd in Brooklyn, at Rough Trade; with their final show August 3rd in Philadelphia at Union Transfer. Katie Ellen joins them on all three dates, with Lilith opening in Boston, Baccahe opening in Brooklyn, and Cave People opening in Philly.

In the announcement, Cateyana said that something that began in 2011 when “the three of us weirdos met at a party in South Philadelphia and decided to start a band” wound up taking them “on a wild ride we could have never imagined.”

We are so floored and grateful that in a world filled with such wonderful music you all took the time to listen to us. We want to sincerely thank all the people who have come out to shows and shared in this project with us. You all afforded us the ability to play music all over the damn place. We toured with our musical heroes, having a sense of pride we could have never imagined, and made so many wonderful friends along the way.

As we gear up to play these last few shows for the foreseeable future…we want to celebrate the beautiful experience we had together.

Here at The Key, we were hooked on Cayetana from the moment we saw them open for Waxahatchee at Golden Tea House in 2013. They would probably tell you that they were still green at that point in their tenure together, but their set nevertheless floored us; the three players had obvious chemistry and charisma, and the driving rhythm section of Anka and Olsen was a powerful prop for Koch’s commanding vocals and observational lyrics.

It’s been a joy watching them grow and evolve, and seeing their music reach an ever-increasing audience; both their LPs, 2014’s Nervous Like Me and 2017’s New Kind of Normal, landed on The Key’s year-end lists, (the former being named best album of that year), and from the Church basement to the Union Transfer stage to a beautiful spring afternoon on Anka’s South Philadelphia roof deck, their performances never let us down. They’ll be dearly missed, and we’ll be at the gig crying right along with you.

Tickets for the Union Transfer show goes on sale Friday, April 19th at 10 a.m., more information at the XPN Concert Calendar.
