Amber Mark | still from video

The 23-year-old alternative R&B artist Amber Mark is a highlight of the Made In America festival undercard, as we hear on her soulful new single “What If.” This is the second song she’s released so far this year, the first one being “Mixer” back in April. Mark hails from New York and began songwriting when she was a teenager as a way of coping with her mother’s death. Growing up, she spent time in India, Germany, Brazil, and Nepal, soaking up different cultures and experiences. She uses this as inspiration and to tell personal tales through her music. Her newest release is about the lessons that come from hardship and how they’re necessary in order to feel happiness.

“What If” gets moving immediately with Mark’s soft, sincere vocals pairing with a heavy groove. The song has a steady beat and bass line that steps aside at the bridge, letting a string section and dreamy backup vocals temporarily carry the track. Mark shows us the power of her vocal chords as she belts it out towards the end of the song. She released a video to go along with “What If” too, and in it she’s surrounded by satin — a perfect visual for the track’s silky richness.

Amber Mark broke onto the scene with her debut album 3:33am in 2017. Since then, she’s released several singles and, though there’s been no mention of Mark’s second LP, she’s touring in and out of the U.S. throughout the summer. Catch her at Philly’s Made in America on August 31st and watch the official “What If” music video below.
