Steve Gunn releases two lush new tracks, “Be Still Moon” and “Shrunken Heads”
Steve Gunn, the Delco-raised Brooklyn-based folk-rock experimenter, released two new songs on Tuesday morning. “Be Still Moon” and “Shrunken Heads” follow Gunn’s LP The Unseen In Between, which came out in January on Matador Records, and both tracks conjure up the same airy beauty, charged with mystery and doubt, that marks the material on the LP.
Like much of Gunn’s past work, “Be Still Moon” presents a collection of several bright acoustic and electric guitar sounds in a lived-in psychedelic space. “Shrunken Heads” also features some of the same instrumentation, and plods along at a similar pace through several odd meters. The two songs both offer plenty of the lyrical enigmas Gunn has become known for — “Messing with my head / Call me when you’re dead / Feel it in your hands / Words are made of sand,” he sings on “Shrunken Heads.” At any given moment, Gunn might be looking inward, or he might be looking out into the void.
Gunn will be on tour in the US and Canada throughout the rest of the summer, and will play Johnny Brenda’s on Friday August 2nd. In the fall, he will tour the US with Dinosaur Jr.
