Philly rapper Khemist has been teasing his debut album Khemtrails for the better part of the past year. He has been keeping fans busy on his YouTube with his #KhemtrailsTV series, documenting its creation. In Episode 3, Khem shows us the creation of “Know Why I F**K With You?,” spotlighting drum, guitar, and vocal recording, on top of Khem messing around recording various textures including bottle sipping, crinkling, and cap twisting.

In the video, Khem documents the before, during, and after of his session, starting it off right by purchasing some alcohol. Producer and drummer Anwar Marshall sets the song up with a steady boom-bap rhythm as Khemist and guitarist Sam “B-Pad” Borrello lay down their respective parts. Bongos, triangles, bass, and synth lines follow as the tune comes together by the end. Khem livens the beat up by recording his bottle, making sure to include as many ASMR-esque sounds as possible.

The tune is a “love song to 40’s,” as said by B-Pad at the end. In the video’s YouTbe description, we learn the reasoning behind including these unique sounds in the song: “Everything matters: the twist of a 40 ounce cap, the last swig of water in a bottle. Khemist wants us to feel the texture of sound.”

Check out the video below, and be on the lookout for Khemtrails later this year. In the meantime, Khemist headlines Johnny Brenda’s with ILL DOOTS on August 1. Tickets and more information on the concert can be found at the XPN Concert Calendar.
