Over the last year, King Princess has been drip-feeding her growing fan base with singles and tours. She’s decided to continue that cycle this week with the announcement of a fall tour and the release of a new single. The Brooklyn-based artist, real name Mikaela Strauss, will play The Filmore on Monday, November 4th. Get ready for her show by spinning her latest track, the slinky “Prophet”.

King Princess debuted in spring 2018 with “1950.” The retro-tinged queer anthem quickly spread across the internet. The single was released on Mark Ronson’s Zelig Records. While her connections to Ronson definitely didn’t hurt, it was Strauss’ warm vocals and vulnerable songwriting that led her to get cosigns from everyone from Fiona Apple to Charli XCX. Last summer, Strauss put out her debut EP, titled Make My Bed, which featured “1950” and four other tracks. Pulling from artists like Perfume Genius, Nick Cave, and Beyoncé, King Princess occupies a unique spot in the current pop landscape.

After a busy summer of touring and promoting, Strauss put out “Pussy is God” in November. The single gleams with masterful guitar playing and bold expressions of queer love. Both the song and its accompanying video blend sexual and religious imagery, making for a thrilling recontextualization of queer romance. Strauss wears her heart on her sleeve, and the fact that her heart beats for women makes her particular brand of pop even more addicting and endearing.

Throughout 2019, Strauss has continued teasing fans with singles. In January, she and Fiona Apple reworked the latter’s track “I Know.” Then, in May, Strauss featured on Mark Ronson‘s Late Night Feelings. Their collaboration, “Pieces of Us”, is a dreamy and glittering track that fits perfectly in with the shimmering world of the album. May also saw the release of solo King Princess tracks. “Cheap Queen” and “Useless Phrases” were both released at the end of the month. Both tracks, and “Prophet,” see Strauss continuing to refine her sound.  With each release, her vision of widespread exuberant, queer pop seems more and more attainable.

Tickets for King Princess’ show at The Filmore on Tuesday, November 4th go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 26th. Find more information on the XPN Concert Calendar. Check out King Princess’ latest single, “Prophet”, below.
