XPN Fest Recap: Kathleen Edwards makes a grand return on the River Stage

Singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards is an XPN fest veteran. She’s also been on hiatus since 2012, and appeared very eager to be back and in action today. Upon jumping on the River Stage, she told a story about her many times performing, even before we were situated at Camden waterfront. “Change The Sheets” was a fantastic way to begin her set, as it set the mood that Edwards was going for.

Her classic “Six O’Clock News” had the loyal XPN audience locked in and singling along, and Edwards followed it with a performance of “Mint.” A wave of applause from the crowd prompted the perfect retort: “don’t clap too hard, that one’s about my ex-husband!” Edwards also previewed a new tune titled “Glen Fern.”

As she moved on, Edwards explained that one of the reasons why she hasn’t been back in so long is that she has since opened up her own coffee shop, called Quitters Coffee, in Stittsville, Ontario. She then proceeded to go into a “why you should never open up a coffee shop” tangent, which made the entire crowd chuckle.

Covering Supertramp’s “Logical Song,” Edwards let loose, dueling it out with her bandmates. On “Asking for Flowers,” Edwards expressed her gratitude towards a fan who actually sent her flowers, a man she said was named Hugh McHugh. With a name like that, she was more than happy to dedicate it to him. The set ended with “Back to You,” thanking Bruce Warren and XPN as a whole for their continued support of her music.
