Lizzo, NPR Tiny Desk Concert | still from video

I dare you to watch Lizzo’s Tiny Desk Concert and not smile. That’s right, you can’t. Because Lizzo‘s soulful vibrato, positive vibes, and quick wit are undeniably contagious, even through your computer screen. For a performance less than 20 minutes long, the pop singer managed to bring a larger crowd to NPR music’s Tiny Desk than ever before, each member of the audience wearing toothy smiles and belly-laughing at Lizzo’s sassy banter.

Absolutely killing a neon orange dress with matching earrings, Lizzo started things off with the title track from her debut album Cuz I Love You. She graced the high notes flawlessly, of course, making the largely teenage audience swoon. Next came “Truth Hurts”, after some transitioning anecdotes about how sometimes, people “ain’t shit.” That same attitude was present throughout the song, during which she proclaimed that she’s proudly “f*ck boy free.”

For her third and final song, Lizzo performed her groovy hit single “Juice”. She broke out her flute to show off her musical talent and had the crowd clapping and “ya-ya-ee”-ing along. She thanked her band for backing her up and her team for putting her eye-catching look together. Lastly, she begged the audience to love themselves: “If you can love my big black ass at this tiny, tiny little desk, you can love yourself.”

Lizzo will play Made in America at the end of August, and she’ll also be at The Met on September 18th. For info about both performances, head to the XPN Concert Calendar. Check out Lizzo’s Tiny Desk Concert below.
