Philly-connected folks with livestream gigs are stacking up on our calendar as the weekend draws near; here are a handful we’re looking forward to.
Waxahatchee, Kevin Morby, and friends jam out on Instagram
Being a band whose tour was cancelled is one thing. But imagine having your album rollout disrupted by Coronavirus? You’ve spent a year plus of pouring your creativity and passion into a project, and the time your label decided it made sense to roll out the singles leading up to the release, the world shuts down. “I’ve been grieving what was supposed to be for the last week & running through all the downsides of having the plan be upended,” writes Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield on Instagram; her magnificent new record Saint Cloud is out on March 27th. “Interestingly i’m landing in some pretty light & spirited places. Shit is so scary but i’m hoping that in our collective respite we can take good care, be creative, love each other, read some books, be productive, stay connected & know that eventually we’ll all emerge having done what we could as a species to fight a shared obstacle.” In that spirit, Crutchfield and her partner Kevin Morby will go live tonight on Instagram at 9 p.m. ET to “play songs, take guests, have a nice evening with y’all.” If you, like me, were very much looking forward to Waxy’s Union Transfer show and are crushed that we no longe know when it’s happening, don’t miss this. Isolation Sessions officially launch with Chris Diehm of Earth Telephone
After a Tuesday night test run with lowercase roses, the new local digital series Isolation Sessions is officially launching tonight with a performance by Philadelphia’s Chris Diehm of Earth Telephone (as well as Year of Glad, 1994!, and so many other great bands). Chris is performing from an undisclosed location, and it will stream via Zoom. Isolation Sessions is the project of Philly photographer Scott Troyan (who, in the interest of disclosure, is my DJ partner for occasional gigs around town when we’re not quarantined) and tickets to each performance are available via Eventrbite, with money going directly to musicians and folks in the service industry affected by the Quarantine. DJ’s Oluwafemi, Rashid Zakat and Lil’ Dave bring the party from parts unknown
This eclectic power trio of Philly DJs was supposed to rock World Cafe Live tonight with Community Service: A Night of Music and Dancing. That, obviously, is no longer happening, but it doesn’t mean we can’t be together and hear music — and dance! — while staying in our respective forms of isolation. DJ Lil Dave of WKDU’s excellent Eavedrop Radio program announced yesterday on Instagram that while details were forthcoming, the trio would be going live on the internet tonight at 6 p.m. ET. And really, lets pause and appreciate how tonight you can see Lil Dave and friends, Earth Telephone, Waxahatchee, and Kevin Morby on the same bill, essentially. [INFO]
Harmony Woods makes up for lost tour with a virtual gig from Luigi’s Mansion
Key fave Harmony Woods is one of so many Philly artists who had their tours cancelled this spring. (More on that in my Tuesday night edition of the XPN Local Show.) After pausing to regroup, band leader / singer-songwriter Sofia Verbilla posted yesterday on Instagram that she’d be going live from West Philly show space Luigi’s Mansion this Saturday at 7 p.m. ET with fellow quarantined bands Equipment, Hospital Bracelet, and Two Thumbs Down. “things are terrifying right now,” Verbilla writes. “but i am v excited to feel kinda normal for a lil bit by playing moody tunes among friends. pls be safe + call your grandparents.” [INFO]
