Philly rapper Sudan released his latest single last week, and through mellow production and pointed lyricism, “Warm Ocean” recalls bits of Travis Scott’s psychedelia, Kendrick Lamar’s gravelly flow, and Frank Ocean’s gift for melody.

In the song, Sudan draws a parallel between the focus needed in the competitive rap game and the focus of romance. First we hear him sizing up his opponents, measuring his skill as an MC against theirs and plotting his path to victory, and next we hear a softer and more sensitive side, cutting out all that external noise and focusing strictly on his partner.

“Warm ocean, think I’m floating / we both water just drowning inside emotion” makes for a beautiful hook in a beautiful song; take a listen below.
