On his second single release of 2020, Philly rapper Sudanreturns with another set of mellow, almost psychedelic verses. “Spirits Up!” clocks in at just over 2 minutes—just enough time for Sudan to drop a series of uplifting, powerful bars. The production, handled by Nothing Special, is equally woozy: synth stabs pop up briefly before dipping back below the mix, cutting through the languid bass chords and trap-influenced 808s.

“Spirits up / What you wanna do / We done had enough,” Sudan raps in the hook. Although the song came out on May 22nd, the recent murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers provides a much heavier context to the track. The song functions as both a call-to-action and a reminder hope for the best—to keep our spirits up—in an extremely dark time for the country and the world.

Sudan has also released a limited edition t-shirt alongside “Spirits Up!” The shirt features a photo of his mother, poet and activist Ursula Rucker, pregnant, “creating life,” along with the powerful reminder that “we are infinite.”
