Shoegaze-influenced Philly band Cigarettes for Breakfast caught our attention last year with the impressive Aphantasia EP, released on Bandcamp in the fall. With a wash of noisy guitars, dreamy atmospheric textures, and drifting vocals by Donnie CoCo, the band channels the splendor of Slowdive as much as the heaviness of Explosions in the Sky.

Their new two-track single further explores those two sonic identities, in less of a crossover mode.

The band describes the project as an argument between parents from the perspective of a child, as seen through the lens of foggy memory. In that sense, the instrumental opener, “I Thought I Was Transforming Into a Butterfly but I Am Yet Another Moth to the Flame,” is the calm before the storm, gliding on glistening Stars of the Lid-esque synth tones before pattering drums explode at the end.

It eases from there into the centerpiece, “Wait,” a bold and entrancing rock number punctuated with tremolo dips and dives, and lyrics of anxious longing — “Wait, we’re still a home / Stay, just on our own / Hey, we’re better off this way.”

Though its seen some lineup shifts since launching, the five piece version of Cigarettes for Breakfast is now comprised of CoCo, drummer Tony Rossi, and multi-instrumentalists Matt Whiteford, Cameron Kynett, and Chris Doyle.
