Since its release in January 1965, John Coltrane’s masterpiece A Love Supreme remains a landmark recording in American music.

The suite and its spiritual connection continues to influence generations of artists and listeners more than fifty years after Coltrane’s death.

In support of the PBS series The Black Church: This is Our Story, This is Our Song, WRTI celebrates Black History Month with a newly-recorded performance of the album at Philadelphia’s Mother Bethel AME Church, one of the historic sanctuaries in America — and WXPN is carrying the special this Friday.

The show features Philadelphia’s Orrin Evans trio with saxophonist Morgan Guerin performing A Love Supreme in its entirety, with newly created texts and readings from Ruth Naomi Floyd.  We’ll also hear “Oh Freedom,” an anthem of the Civil Rights Movement, the sacred communion hymn “Let Us Break Bread Together,” and “Surrounded,” an original from Ruth Naomi Floyd

WRTI’s Devotion: A Love Supreme will air on WXPN this Friday, February 19th at 10 p.m. ET, immediately following Culture Cypher Radio. Get a preview of the show in the video below.
