Devi Majeske has been creating music as Air Devi for nearly six years now. She has added to her growing discography yet again with her first track of 2021, “mosquitos in the backyard.”

The song itself is gorgeous, but there’s something particularly alluring and provocative about the semi-surreal lyrics. As per usual, Devi brings her eclectic sensibility to the track. The opening lines of the song conjure up some strong imagery as Majeske sings, “Wash lines swaying / Shivers find me in the sweltering sun / Lush perfumes hanging / Drawn sighs ceding to what’s waining.”

Her next lines, though, left me with one burning question: What the hell is mefloquine or a mefloquine dream? Someone more knowledgeable might have already known, but a quick google revealed that mefloquine is a medication to treat or prevent malaria and that horrible dreams can be one of its major side effects.

Needless to say the whole line has me floored. It is indescribably brilliant and there is no explanation for how she made such an abstract word sound so good. Has anyone else ever managed to make mefloquine sound so catchy and, frankly, glamorous? If they have, then Majeske is giving them some stiff competition. There is undoubtedly deeper meaning to the song, but something about the straightforward connection of an anti-malaria medication and mosquitos is something that only someone as talented as Majeske could pull off.

The rest of the song is similarly littered with lyrical gems like that, not even taking into consideration the catchy, rhythmic melody and Majeske’s velvety vocals. But you can just discover that part of “mosquitos in the backyard” by listening to it below.
