Lucy Dacus just announced that her third album, Home Video, will be released June 25 on Matador Records. The lead single “Hot & Heavy” is out now, and Dacus will celebrate the news with a performance of the song on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert tonight.

Home Video is like a musical memoir for the songwriter. The album finds Dacus exploring her childhood in Richmond, Virginia, and the complicated nostalgia of returning to her hometown as an adult after finding success in her music career.

“I thought I was writing ‘Hot & Heavy’ about an old friend, but I realized along the way that it was just about me outgrowing past versions of myself,” Dacus says about the song. “So much of life is submitting to change and saying goodbye even if you don’t want to. Now whenever I go to places that used to be significant to me, it feels like trespassing the past. I know that the teen version of me wouldn’t approve of me now, and that’s embarrassing and a little bit heartbreaking, even if I know intellectually that I like my life and who I am.”

Dacus directed the video for “Hot & Heavy,” which was filmed in Richmond’s historic Byrd Theatre where she went to movies as a teenager. It also features video footage from Dacus’ childhood shot by her dad, and her family members and close friends as extras. Watch below.

Dacus also announced a fall tour that includes a show at Union Transfer on October 20. Tickets go on sale this Friday, April 16. Please note that scheduled concerts are subject to change dependent on city and state COVID-19 regulations.
