Country singer-songwriter Zach Bryan wasn’t much for conversation in today’s Free at Noon concert. Playing acoustic from Whidbey Island, Washington — where he’s is based for his duties in the U.S. Navy — Bryan preferred to let the music do the talking, setting up each song with details about what album it was from (or what album it might be on in the future), and otherwise singing and strumming.

The recent “Someday on my Mind” finds him singing about catching up with old friends, singing around the campfire over beers for the first time in years — something we’re all looking forward to as the great reopening of the world seems ever closer on the horizon — while “Letting Someone Go” is a melancholy reflection with a Gaslight Anthem vibe.

“Condemned” finds Bryan opening up about insecurities and feeling alone in the world, singing “No one gives a damn about me” at the opening and heading towards a refrain of “Lord knows no glory in the fall If no one’s around at the end of it all.” By comparison, “Ninth Cloud” is a vivid observational description of life as a touring musician — “I can’t afford a motel, but the floorboards work well / and I’ll sleep there tomorrow afternoon.” The show closed by traveling the warm and inviting country roads of “Heading South.”
