The beloved performing arts space PhilaMOCA is coming back from the dead, after 685 days of closure.

Prior to the pandemic, the long-running home of all-ages shows, film screenings, and theatrical performances was shut down by Philadelphia’s department of Licenses and Insepctions — read more here and here — and just as they began work with the city to get the building up to code and properly zoned, the Coronavirus lockdown hit, putting a stop to public gatherings for the past year.

PhilaMOCA stayed afloat and completed projects via a successful GoFundMe campaign; last month, they announced that the work with the city was complete, and they were all set to re-open. This this morning venue manager Eric Bresler announced a date.

On Thursday, July 22nd, PhilaMOCA re-opens with an apt screening of the 1983 cult horror classic Mausoleum — it is the Philadelphia Mausoleum of Contemporary Art, after all — and more event announcements are anticipated in the coming days and weeks, “both music and movies, and R5 have a ton of cool stuff to announce too.”

“We truly wouldn’t be reopening without your generous donations and kind words of support,” Bresler wrote on the GoFundMe. “I can’t thank you all enough and I promise to bring PhilaMOCA to new heights of programming in the coming years.”

Tickets to Mausoleum are available here. Bresler also mentioned that he’s been working on a feature-length presentation about the closure of PhilaMOCA and the road to resurrection; those events take place Friday, July 23rd and Saturday, July 24th, and tickets are available here and here.
