Lucy Dacus will host a record signing and meet and greet at Repo Records on June 25, at 5:30. There will be copies of her new album, Home Video, on sale, which will be out the same day.

After a year of lockdown and fearing the future, it seems only natural for people to take comfort in reminiscing. For Dacus, that meant pouring over memories of summers spent at Bible camp and her years coming-of-age in Richmond, VA. Despite delving deep into her past and the largely autobiographical subject matter on her latest album, she doesn’t treat it as an attempt to understand herself.

“I don’t necessarily think that I’m supposed to understand the songs just because I made them. I feel like there’s this person who has been in me my whole life, and I’m just doing my best to represent them,” Dacus said in a statement.

In her latest single, “Brando,” she reflects on a high school friend whose entire personality revolved around the media he consumed. The track posses a certain cinematic quality with its twinkling guitars and the turbulent relationship it depicts. Unlike the star-crossed lovers they see on the silver screen, he calls her cerebral instead of pretty, and she contemplates jumping out of his moving car on a snowy drive home. Just like when the lights come on in the theater, only when it’s over can Dacus see his belittling behavior as nothing more than teenage insecurity. No longer charmed by his obscure old Hollywood references, she sounds bored as she begs “all I need for you to admit / is that you never knew me like you thought you did.” Not destined to be the next Fred and Ginger, it’s one of those relationships that you realize wasn’t right once the credits begin to roll.
