Marissa Paternoster of Screaming Females and Noun announced today a new solo record called Peace Meter. The new record, which is the first to be released under Pasternoster’s own name, is due out December 3rd via Don Giovanni Records. “White Dove,” the leading single, is out now with an accompanying music video.

Paternoster wrote Peace Meter during the first wave of COVID-19, when she arrived home to her deceased grandmother’s empty house after her west coast tour was canceled. The bones of the record are all Paternoster, but friends and fellow musicians Andy Gibbs of THOU, Shanna Polley of Snakeskin, Kate Wakefield of Lung, and producer Eric Bennett all contributed to Peace Meter virtually, without ever playing together in the same room.

“White Dove” begins to explain why Paternoster is releasing Peace Meter under her own name, and not as Noun, her solo musical project since 2004. The sound is different than fans would expect from the revered guitar player: the song is simple, and the music exists mainly to carry Paternoster’s soaring vocals and their powerful lyrical content. The music video for “White Dove” echoes the song’s chilling beauty with direct images. Paternoster walks through a cemetery wearing a white dress and carrying wilted roses for the duration of the video, all the while not breaking eye contact with the camera.
