Taylor Kelly is no stranger to self-doubt. On her latest single, “Maybe,” the Philadelphia-based singer-songwriter confronts the never-ending stream of what-if’s that we often get bogged down by. A moment of reflection amidst ever-changing circumstances, her music video reflects the confusion that comes with trying to figure out who you really are.

Directed by Matt Keppler, the video shows Kelly first wrapped up in a gauzy cocoon as life happens around her. Hands appear to brush her hair, apply make-up, and feed her as she remains completely powerless and passive. However, she begins to gain some autonomy and independence, breaking free from her restraints. As she dances under fluorescent lights and spins around on a rooftop overlooking the city, she appears genuinely happy. Casting her doubts aside, by the end of the video she seems comfortable and content with herself.

“Maybe” is the first single from a project Kelly recorded in 2020 while she was struggling to find inspiration and motivation during the pandemic, she wrote in an Instagram post. With a slinking beat and velvety vocals, she muses, “I let everything get to me / and I forget how to be / I talk myself out of things that could be good for me.” A patchwork of jazz, R&B, and soul, the swirl of sound she creates as complex as the emotions she’s trying to navigate.
