If you’re one of those people that’s upset about The Black Crowes breaking up, don’t worry. Blackberry Smoke’s got you. The blues-playin’, yee-hawin’ southern cats from Atlanta, Georgia strutted their stuff up North through Philly Friday, playing an intimate, stripped down set for XPN’s Free at Noon during lunchtime. But they plugged in their Les Pauls, raised some hell, and put the “Electric” in Electric Factory for the evening show. Continue reading →

Rock and roll quintet Blackberry Smoke trickled onstage to an amped up crowd at today’s Free At Noon. The Atlanta natives prepared a special set for this afternoon in Philadelphia, going unplugged and acoustic and owning their performance all the while. Laying into their track “Ain’t Got The Blues”, lead singer Charlie Starr and guitarist Paul Jackson whipped out some impressive simultaneous finger-picking while drummer Brit Turner held down the beats with his declared “sweetar”, an altered acoustic guitar he used for percussion. The artists later commented that Philadelphia has remained a special place for them, as Jackson’s family originates from our fine city. The performance was lighthearted, with excited fans clapping and hooting at the band mates throughout it’s entirety.

The Key’s Ultimate Guide to Summer Music Festivals 2016 – Part One

Over the past few years, the United States and Canada have finally made their mark in a tradition that’s been a longstanding one in Europe: Music festivals. This is happened to such a degree that it’s nearly impossible to keep track of them all. Wouldn’t it be great if someone singled out all your favorite XPN artists and which festivals they’re playing in one spot on the internet?!?!?!

Guess what! That’s exactly what we did here. But there’s a catch: There’s a lot of festivals that haven’t revealed lineups yet, so were only going to give you festivals for the first half of summer for now. A little later on we’ll give you the second half. (Okay, I guess that means the list is in two spots on the internet, but still. You get the point.) Without further adieu, here’s the first part of The Key’s 2016 Guide to Summer Music Festivals. Continue reading →

Rocking and Rolling Down South: A recap of Atlanta’s Shaky Knees Festival

Dr. Dog | Photo by Tom Beck

There’s usually a downside to festivals having stacked lineup: with so many great artists, you’re never going to be able to see them all. So when I made the trek down south to attend what is becoming the best indie-rock festival in North America – the Shaky Knees Festival in Atlanta – there were a lot of difficult choices to be made. Do I see The Kooks or Wavves? Kaiser Chiefs or Manchester Orchestra? Wilco or Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds? Dr. Dog or Diamond Rugs?

But even with all these conflicts (my picks: Wavves, Manchester Orchestra, Wilco and Philly’s Dr. Dog), I wasn’t disappointed. Continue reading →
