Singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards is an XPN fest veteran. She’s also been on hiatus since 2012, and appeared very eager to be back and in action today. Upon jumping on the River Stage, she told a story about her many times performing, even before we were situated at Camden waterfront. “Change The Sheets” was a fantastic way to begin her set, as it set the mood that Edwards was going for. Kathleen Edwards performed last night at World Cafe Live. Her new record, Voyageur, was co-produced by Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, and last night’s concert goers were treated to a special appearance from Vernon. Special thanks to the guys from Philly’s Work Drugs for the photos they took during the show. They commented: “Justin definitely played the role of side man, singing and playing guitar on some cuts from the new record.”
Below, you can watch a fan video of the song “12 Bellevue.”
Changes in an artist’s style of sound can signify many things. In Kathleen Edwards’ case, the transition from pure Americana to a softer, indie-rock-oriented feel reveals the heartache and dismay that resulted from her toll-taking divorce. Edwards’ latest album, Voyageur, is the telling of her recent split from musician and producer Colin Cripps; the album was produced by her new romantic interest, Bon Iver front man Justin Vernon. (Hence the heavy indie-rock influence.) “Change The Sheets,” the first single from “Voyageur,” is a moving and mournful song that conveys exactly what it was meant to, with Edwards’ crystal-clear vocals and dejected, almost defeated lyrics. As Edwards leaves a complicated relationship behind, she simultaneously delves head-first into a lighter, more refreshing sound.
