At the end of last month, Philly favorites Modern Baseball set out on a full North American headlining run, The Holy Ghost Tour, in support of their newest and most emotionally raw album yet, Holy Ghost. Another Philly band, Thin Lips, and Joyce Manor from California, were brought along on this tour to support the band. On Sunday night, Modern Baseball brought their highly anticipated tour home to Philly, where they played to a huge crowd that packed The Fillmore in Fishtown. Continue reading →
With the release of her debut LP Out of Love just last month, Rosali is in Philly tonight for a hometown record release show at Ortlieb’s. The folk singer songwriter premiered her music video for the track “Black As Ashes” with us earlier this month and you can check out the kaleidoscopic world she creates below. The day before they released Holy Ghost, Modern Baseball played an in-store set at Long in the Tooth for people who pre-ordered the new LP. The set consisted of most of the new record, plus older songs like “Your Graduation” and “Fine, Great.” The Key’s John Vettese was on hand to capture the event on film, snapping shots of the band setting up for the session, fans browsing for records, MoBo frontman Brendan Lukens taking selfies and signing autographs, and of course people singing along. Modern Baseball headline The Fillmore‘s main stage on June 26th; tickets and information can be found on the XPN Concert Calendar.
Let’s not mince words here – Modern Baseball‘s new Holy Ghost is out this week and it’s a frickin’ masterpiece.
The record finds the Philly four-piece stepping beyond the punk rock roots of its formative releases and into bigger, bolder sonic territories, armed with some of their most disarmingly honest and personal songwriting to date. Divided down the middle (a la Speakerboxx / The Love Below) with an A-side focusing on singer-guitarist Jacob Ewald’s tracks and a B-side collecting Brendan Lukens’ tracks, Holy Ghost – out Friday on Run For Cover – is a stirring meditation on loss and change.
Ewald’s grandfather passed away at the same time as he was entering a new romantic relationship and, as he describes it, he found himself torn between two types conflicting emotions, both very intense. Lukens, meanwhile, struggled with mental health issues, and tells us that his half of Holy Ghost focused the things he learned about his illness, his addiction and himself while at an out-patient psychiatric treatment center.
The songwriting duo’s unflinching self-reflection and fearless honesty resulted in their most engaging record to date, and some of their biggest shows as well. Continue reading →
We’re just about a week away from the release of Holy Ghost, the much-anticipated follow-up to Modern Baseball‘s 2014 LP You’re Gonna Miss It All, and the Philly-based band has given us another preview in the form of a video for “Wedding Singer.”
Philly punk explorers Modern Baseball have shared two new songs from their upcoming Holy Ghost, “Apple Cider, I Don’t Mind,” and “Everyday.”
Holy Ghost arrives as a follow-up to 2014’s You’re Gonna Miss It All and last year’s MOBO Presents: The Perfect Cast EP. Where You’re Gonna Miss It All mixed songs from the band’s two core songwriters, Brendan Lukens and Jake Ewald, Holy Ghost is split right down the middle, with side A containing songs from Ewald and side B from Lukens.
On these new songs, MOBO follows their punk voyage into a more expansive territory. “Everyday,” which was penned by Ewald, is a slow-build odyssey featuring picked acoustic guitar and a sing a long bridge before breaking into a bursting outro that contains what sounds kind of like a low bass synth drone. Local emo/punk outfit Modern Baseball have announced more details for their new full-length Holy Ghost, including a track listing and album art. The album will be released on May 13th through Run for Cover Records and follows up last fall’s surprise MoBo Presents: The Perfect Cast EP.
With a new EP out and a fall tour on the books, Philadelphia emo-rock faves Modern Baseball recently sat down for an interview with Brooklyn Vegan. In it, they discuss balancing school and “real life,” the growth of their sound and their upcoming full length Holy Ghost, and they also get a chance to discuss the Philly music scene. Did Modern Baseball just pull a Beyonce on us? This week, West Philadelphia’s favorite hometown heroes dropped a surprise EP via Lame-O Records. The record, entitled MoBo Presents: The Perfect Cast EP featuring Modern Baseball, features some songs that we’ve heard before. “Alpha Kappa Fall Of Troy The Movie Part Deux (2 Disc Directors Cut)” was originally released as “Alpha Kappa Fall Of Troy The Movie Part Deux” on Lame-O’s Strength in Weakness compilation back in February, and the four-piece released “The Thrash Particle” as a single earlier this month.
