Tonight’s Concert Picks: Sad13 at PhilaMOCA, Mexrrissey at The Kimmel Center, T.J. Kong and The Atomic Bomb at Underground Arts and more

Mostly known for her role as frontwoman for grunge-pop band Speedy Ortiz, Sadie Dupuis is slated to release her first solo album Slugger on November 11th under the moniker Sad13. She kicked off her debut tour on Thursday, and is paying Philadelphia a visit tonight at PhilaMOCA. Sad13’s music is largely centered around the idea of empowering women, and we’re all for it. Joining this Massachusetts synth-popper will be Philly artists Ivy Sole and Empath with NYC-based rapper Sammus topping off this stacked lineup. Church Girls and MINKA team up on “Deserve”

Philebrity shared a new song from Church Girls today that features fellow locals MINKA. The recording took place at Miner Street Recording in January for a Weathervane Music Workshop and the result is a fully-harnessed sparkling pop / rock song about navigating the world post-break-up. There’s no shred of self-pity or wallowing though, as Mariel Beaumont attacks her lyrics with confidence as MINKA absolutely rip through the lush instrumental arrangements.

Not unlike the latest from local crew Illinois, a music video released today by Philadelphia indie-dance crew Minka finds the band firmly planted in summery days and warmer climes. As frontman Ariel Ruben explains, the “Kids These Days” video – filmed in Ocean City and Fishtown – follows a couple whose marriage has grown stale, so they rekindle their love by joining local kids in some mayhem, both planned and unplanned.
