1962 – Unhappy with drummer Pete Best’s role in The Beatles, Brian Epstein and the other three members decide to sack him. Best plays his last gig the following night at The Cavern in Liverpool. Ringo Starr, who is nearing the end of a three-month engagement with Rory Storm & the Hurricanes, receives a call from John Lennon asking him to join the band. Ringo gives Rory Storm three days’ notice and makes his first appearance with the Fab Four on August 18.

Stream Metals, the new album by Feist (performing at the World Cafe 20th Anniversary show Oct. 29th)

Ani DiFranco, John Hiatt, Indigo Girls, The Little Willies, The Jayhawks, Dawes (with special guest Robbie Robertson), Amos Lee, and Feist are the artists performing during the World Cafe 20th Anniversary tribute concerts in October. (For a complete list of World Cafe 20th Anniversary tribute shows and tickets go here.) Feist is performing on a bill with Dawes and Robbie Robertson on Saturday, October 29th. Feist’s new album Metals is being released on October 4th however you can stream the album in its entirety below.

Feist and Robbie Robertson to perform at World Cafe’s 20th Anniversary Celebration on Oct. 29th

In honor of World Cafe’s 20th anniversary this October, WXPN is throwing a weekend-long celebration that will include performances by Feist and Robbie Robertson at World Cafe Live on Saturday, October 29th. (Performers for Friday, October 28th will be announced soon; on Sunday, October, 30th, local favorite Amos Lee will perform at private concert exclusively for donors of WXPN’s Campaign For The Music.) Tickets for the performances will become available Thursday, September 1st.

WXPN is also giving away three trips to the World Cafe 20th Anniversary Celebration and each winner gets a pair of tickets to concerts during the weekend. The prize also includes round trip transportation, a three-night stay at a luxury-grade hotel, gift certificates to top restaurants, and passes to Philadelphia’s main attractions. Each winner will also receive a copy of Live At The World Cafe 20th Anniversary Edition on CD and collector’s edition double-vinyl LP. Fans can enter the contest by visiting www.xpn.org and submitting an entry before Thursday, September 15; inners will be selected on Monday, September 19.
