My discovery of singer-songwriter Chelsea Sue Allen is another wonderful case of Philly musicians doing right by their own. Just over a year ago, Folkadelphia was putting together a concert at the intimate Random Tea Room with our good friend and frequent collaborator Joshua Britton of Psalmships. He recommended that a take a listen to Allen’s Tiny Prizes debut album, as well as her On The Hill session. Of course, the rest is history.

We added her to the bill and I’ve been mildly obsessed with the music ever since. Chelsea, often accompanied by her sister Shay, has the rare ability to make any listening space one of intimacy. I’ve seen the Allens command rock clubs as deftly as living rooms. While the words and guitar interplay drift along, ebb and flow, rise and fall, they contain a weight and a meaningfulness that is absent from many other songwriters purportedly of similar ilk. Chelsea Sue Allen is a unique talent who is just getting started; as of writing, she has a nearly year old EP Reunion and the aforementioned full length, but a follow-up is in the works. It can’t come soon enough!
