Many people try to separate hip hop & spoken word, not realizing that they’re actually the same thing. Hip hop is poetry with a beat and a chorus. If you take those two things away, you have a rapper giving you a sweet sixteen a capella. Basically this means that any time you see a spoken word artist perform you’re also watching a hip hop artist. With that being said, Philly’s E the Poet-Emcee is one of the best that either world has to offer. Seeing this man perform is an experience like no other. His wordplay and metaphors shows that he is indeed a true wordsmith. Any time E performs, he makes sure to give the audience so much food for thought that they leave stuffed and satisfied. If you want to see him perform, you’re in luck: he and his lovely wife, Lady Sarkazym (who is also an amazing spoken word artist) will host an event called “The Juke Jawn” on Thursday, on October 2nd at The Poet’s Art Gallery, at 4032 W. Girard Avenue in PhillyBelow, watch E the Poet-Emcee’s video for “Black Men.”
