Seth Avett of The Avett Brothers and singer, songwriter and guitarist Jessia Lea Mayfield have teamed up on a collaboration of cover songs of Elliott Smith, the influential singer-songwriter from Portland, Oregon, who died in 2003 at the age of 34 from stab wounds. Seth Avett & Jessica Lea Mayfield Sing Elliott Smith is out March 17th and features some of Smith’s best known songs including “Baby Britain,” “Between The Bars,” and “Roman Candle,” the title song to his debut release in 1994.

Working over a period of three years, the album was produced by Avett. The album is gorgeously, yet sparingly produced, and their harmonies are exquisite. While Avett and Mayfield’s names in certain music fan circles will bring attention to the album, they keep the songs and lyrics of Smith’s songs right at center stage, and they lovingly keep Smith’s work as the star of the album. Check out the tracklist below; one song not they chose not to cover was “Miss Misery,” the Grammy nominated song from the 1997 movie Good Will Hunting. For many viewers, the site of watching Smith perform that night in his white suit was an uncomfortable moment of awkwardness; yet for millions, they were exposed to one of the great singer-songwriters from the 90s. Hopefully this new collection will turn even more music fans into Elliott Smith fans.
