In October of last year, one of the most acclaimed indie rock bands of the nineties, Luna, announced they were reuniting a decade after their 2004 breakup. Formed by singer, songwriter and guitarist Dean Wareham after the breakup of Galaxie 500, with Stanley Demeski of The Feelies and Justin Harwood of The Chills, the band’s sound was guitar driven, dreamy, fuzzy, and intricate, highlighted by Wareham’s laconic vocals.
For a lot of music fans who grew up in the 90s, Luna was their version of Velvet Underground and Television. Luna’s music also flew in the face of grunge, and was the perfect antidote for corporate rock at the moment, even as the band signed to a major label, Elektra Records. Of the band’s nine studio releases, their first three releases – Lunapark, the Slide EP and Bewitched – are indispensable, and remain timeless musical treasures.
After Luna broke up, Wareham and the band’s bassist, Britta Phillips, formed a band, released several albums, toured, and married in 2007. In 2014 Wareham released his first solo album produced by My Morning Jacket’s Jim James.
