Listen to (and watch!) XPN’s Super #1 Hits of the 60s Weekend playlist

This past weekend World Cafe host David Dye hosted the Super #1 Hits of the 60s weekend. Dye played all the number one Billboard Hot hits in chronological order from January 1960 through December, 1969.

The Super #1 Hits of the 60s weekend started with Marty Robbins’ country hit “El Paso,” and ending with “Someday We’ll All Be Together” by The Supremes. The decades went from the easy listening sounds of Bobby Vinton and Connie Francis, to instrumentals of the times including “Telstar” by The Tornados and “Theme From A Summer Place” by Percy Faith, to rock and R&B classics by The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, and a variety of Motown artists.

Some songs, like “Winchester Cathedral” by The New Vaudeville Band, “The Ballad of the Green Berets” by Barry Sadler, and The Singing Nun’s “Dominique,” may have been head-scratchers, but keep in mind, that during the times, these were the songs that captivated the imaginations of the soon-to-be Boomer generation. It was really #SuperXPN.
