The Roots in “Proceed” | still from video

Throughout the Summer, WXPN has been doing a special themed weekly programming series – #TBTXPN – a musical #ThrowbackThursday through August. Each week XPN has been traveling back to a special year, a genre, or musical movement.

This week we’re putting the spotlight on the sounds of Philly for Philly music day. So much incredible music has come out of Philly, from the Gamble and Huff Sounds of Philly to Hall and Oates, the era of The Hooters and The Dead Milkmen to Grover Washington, Jr. and the current awesomeness: The War On Drugs, Dr. Dog, Nothing, Modern Baseball, Hop Along, Kississippi and so many more.

While Philly has thrown down in R&B, soul, rock and indie-rock, this city has always had a vital and important hip-hop and rap music scene. Philly was on the map at the dawn of rap music, and we’ve gathered together some of our favorite old school jams for you below for #tbtXPN Philly Music Day.
