Philly singer/rapper Alexander Charles started the 52 Weeks project at the start of 2018, the goal being to produce one song a week. At 42 weeks in, the latest release, “Lady God” references Ariana Grande’s “God Is A Woman” in the first line: “I know that God’s a women / and now I have a the proof / my mom inspired me, taught me what I had to do.”

He goes on to express regret for his own disrespectful behavior towards women, and apologize for the injustice of “men who try to legislate your body,” a piercingly poignant line. Maybe he can’t change his past actions, and this won’t erase misogyny from existence, but this is definitely the kind of music your mother would approve of.
