On January 4, fans will gather for Philly Remembers David Berman to pay tribute to the beloved Silver Jews frontman on what would have been his 53rd birthday. Berman, who passed away in August, was best known for his 20-year career with the Silver Jews, the band he formed with Pavement’s Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich; just a few months ago, he released new music under the name Purple Mountains.

Philly band Speedy Ortiz will perform songs from the Silver Jews and Purple Mountains catalogs during the tribute show. Members of local bands including Hop Along, Slaughter Beach Dog, Tigers Jaw, mewithoutYou, and Radiator Hospital will join them for songs and poetry readings. 100% of proceeds from the event will be donated to the nonprofit organization MusiCares in Berman’s name.

“Just a few days before his newest project Purple Mountains was set to play World Cafe Live, beloved indie musician and poet David Berman suddenly passed away on August 7th,” the venue writes on its website. “As much as we wished to hold a gathering for fans that night, we wanted to take the time to put together a proper memorial.”

Tickets for Philly Remembers David Berman go on sale this Friday, October 11 at 10 a.m. Find more information on the XPN Concert Calendar.
